Pink and Paisley

Outfit: Blouse, Shorts - Zara; Shoes, Necklace - Primark, Bag - Vintage, Bangles -  India

Last week I went to Southern Spain with my family to capture a few last rays of sunshine.  As it was my final chance to devour in the delights of summer fashion, I chose this paisley blouse in fuschia - a favourite summer colour of mine - and plenty of brightly coloured jewellery for an evening out.  With eye-popping colour a major trend for Autumn, I'm thinking the blouse will also take me through the coming season, perhaps paired with a high waisted skirt and tights...

A Few Outfits from Italy

Outfit 1: Wandering around Venice in Navy Polka Dots
Outfit: Skirt, Blouse, Shoes - Vintage; Belt and Sunglasses - H&M; Headband - Primark; Bag - India

Outfit 2: A Dotty Playsuit
Outfit: Playsuit - Urban Outfitters; Sunglasses - H&M; Headscarf and Bag - India; Shoes - Primark

Outfit 3: Ancient Rome in a Summer Dress
Outfit: Dress, Shoes - Primark, Belt - H&M

My outfits for Italy centered around what would be most comfortable to wear for long days in the summer heat.  As we spent the majority of our days wandering around the sights I went for light weight, floaty fabrics to keep me cool and headbands with simple accessories.  One of my favourite pieces that I wore has to be be the playsuit in outfit 2, it is so effortless to throw on and easy to wear, I pulled it out twice on the trip.

Orange Skirt Take Two

Outfit: Skirt - Zara, Jumper - H&M, Shoes - New Look, Sunglasses - Vintage, Headscarf - India

A more casual and relaxed outfit. I've worn several variations of this, finding that pairing a more formal piece (the skirt) with minimal basics such as baggy jumpers and stripy t-shirts makes for a dressed down approach, something that I wear far more regularly.

Orange Skirt Take One

Outfit: Skirt - Zara; Blouse - Vintage; Clutch - Vintage; Sunglasses - H&M; Shoes - Primark

I picked up this skirt in the Zara sales after being inspired to wear more vibrant colours on my recent trip to India.  The combination of a tailored cut, vibrant colour and relaxed side pockets make it an effortless piece to wear.  Paired with a vintage sheer blouse - I fell for the cut out cameo on the rear - and large bug sunglasses it feels quite formal.  My next post will feature this skirt in a more casual compilation.

Beauty Buzz: Pastel Nails

Over the last few weeks I have had a bit of a love affair with pastel nails.  I've been alternating between a mint blue (seen in my last post) and a rose pink and am currently on the lookout for a lemon yellow shade.  At this time of year I love to wear a colour that highlights a light tan and still acts as a pop of colour against an otherwise neutral outfit.

What are your favourite shades to wear at this time of year?

Missoni Style Knits

Outfit: Dress, Shoes, Hairband - Primark, Bag - Vintage

When I first saw this dress, the intricate pattern reminded me of the work of Missoni.  One of the things the fashion house is most famous for is its significant style of knitting- abstract and geometric patterns in a kaleidoscope of colours.  Of course as the dress was from Primark and a fraction of the price I snapped it up and paired it with neutral accessories and pastel blue nails, colours I love for a carefree summer vibe.

Kimono Queen

Outfit: Kimono - Topshop, Vest - Gap, Skirt - H&M, Bag and bangles -India

I have a friend who is somewhat a kimono queen.  They are one of her ultimate staples, she throws them on over skirts, skinny jeans and dresses instantly adding interest and detail to an outfit.  Recently (due to their abundance in the shops) I have come to appreciate their appeal and versatility.  Worn belted, tied at the waist or left loose, they feel effortless to wear and add a certain fluidity to an outfit.  The array of oriental patters is also something I've fallen for.  This pink one, borrowed from my friend ticks all the kimono boxes: being light, a flattering cut and featuring an eyecatching floral pattern makes it a wearable piece for all seasons.

Pick a Daisy

Outfit: Shorts - H&M, Blouse - Bond, Shoes and Bag - Vintage, Headscarf - Market in India, Sunglasses, Bracelet - Primark

I don't think summer fashion could be summer fashion without the floral print.  Year after year it returns in the collections, in the shops and in the streets.  I picked up these floral daisy shorts in H&M a while ago, drawn to the cute minature print and gathered waist band (infinitely more flattering) and have since paired them with blazers and a multitude of silk tops, this red one being a favourite.

'Ocean Colour Scene' Editorial - Vogue UK March 2011

'Ocean Colour Scene' editorial - Vogue UK March 2011
'It's a wondrous view: big, bold, spicy hues on cottons and silks, simple peasant tops and long, sweeping skirts are a sunny outlook for summer. Photographs by Mario Testino..'

'Maximalism' vs. 'Minimalism' - a clear dichotomy for the forthcoming season. On the one hand, we all want to possess a dose of the refined sophistication seen at the simplistic shows of Chloe and Céline; yet the bold and dynamic approach of clashing prints and screams of colour at Prada and Jill Sander seems, well so much more exciting.

Personally I feel this editorial captures the ultimate essence of the two - loud, vivid hues of pea green and golden ochre combined with simplistic skirt shapes and luminous, natural beauty.

Swinging in Rouge

Outfit: Dress- Topshop; Shoes and Sunglasses - Primark; Necklace - Vintage

When it comes to an item of clothing, for me a touch of detailing on the back makes it much more worthy of interest. This red dress has seldom been worn due to its inappropriately short length, in truth I tend to wear it only in foreign countries. For some reason the warmer weather enables it to feel much more acceptable than in England where there's certainly a stigma attached to the length of a skirt. Despite this, it is the only item I own that possesses the beloved skater shaped skirt - something I have had my eye on for several seasons and which I aim to own more of over the following months. As for the bizarre spy-like glasses, I love them even though they lean towards the ridiculous.

As summer fades away...

- Bright, vibrant colours -

- Shades of nude worn with a mellowing tan -
- Hints of romance -

When one season comes to an end, another begins. However, as autumn commences I can't help but feel dismayed that for another six months (at least) such exquisite outfits as these will be out of bounds. So many of my favourite elements of fashion seem to be limited to summer wear; nudes and whites worn with a dusky tan, bright colours, floaty fabrics and anything made out of lace. From my 'style inspiration' folder I have compiled a number of images which outline my ultimate summer style from the passing season.

What will you miss most about summer fashion?
